Human rights are the rights and freedoms to which all human beings are equally entitled from birth. They include fundamental civil and political rights, such as the right to life or liberty, freedom of opinion and expression, equality before the law, and economic, social and cultural rights, such as the right to participate freely in cultural life, the right to food, education and work. In 1950, the United Nations General Assembly designated 10 December as Human Rights Day to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 1948.
